What if there were a
more afforable,
community-focused
way to live and
raise children in
urban areas?
What if you could keep your housing costs low, while having a built-in network of support for raising kids? And in doing so, contribute to a system that allows others the same opportunity?
We believe that a different model for urban living with children can exist - one that is sustainable, practical, and fun. One that is centered on community, built on creating networks of mutual support for adults and kids.
Motivated by the concept that parenting is a team effort and that children benefit greatly from having multiple caring adults in their lives, we are creating The Canopy, an intentionally child-friendly housing cooperative in the greater Boston area.
The Canopy is part of Boston Community Cooperatives, our 501c3 nonprofit umbrella organization that furthers the coop movement by creating shared infrastructure among several coop houses under joint ownership.
We have purchased a property -- a three-story home in the Codman Square neighborhood of Dorchester.
We will never sell this house for a profit. Instead, we will use it to ensure that rent remains affordable for Canopy members for generations to come. We plan to put the equity in this house toward the purchase of additional houses, so that even more people can experience cooperative living if they choose.
The Boston Community Cooperatives network of homes will confer benefits to the people who live there, the surrounding community, and the cooperative living movement---forever.
We are actively recruiting potential members -- please visit our JOIN page to learn more.

We've now reached our fundraising goal, but this video from our fundraising campaign does a pretty good job of explaining what The Canopy is all about!
