Canopy value: Nonviolence
The Canopy seeks to create and be a kid-friendly, anti-oppressive, and nonviolent space for adults to support one another in caring for our children. For this reason, corporal punishment is actively rejected as a tool to influence our children's behavior. Our commitment to disciplining our children means that we know that with time, patience, and observation, all children can be supported to grow into their best selves. Using a combination of planning, play, and listening, along with behavior and environmental modifications, children can and do respond to thoughtful interventions. We are cognizant that parenting is hard work and grateful that we have the opportunity and space to parent and support one another in an intentional way. Our commitment to finding a variety of non-physical ways to correct and teach our children is not only philosophical, but also based upon our understanding of the most recent scientific research on this subject, some of which can be found at this article.
